Discovering the Threads of My Identity: From Seamstress to Business Owner

Who am I? A parent, a grandparent, a wife, a caregiver—a retired business manager turned passionate seamstress. From my school days to a lifelong skill, sewing has been my constant companion. What was once a hobby has now blossomed into a business venture. As a one-woman show, I embrace the challenges and joys of hand-crafting custom costumes for figure skating and dance. Devoted to excellence, I leave no detail unnoticed, ensuring my clients feel and look their best. Through this blog, I aim to share my journey, insights, and the artistry that goes into designing and creating unique custom figure skating dresses and custom dance costumes.

Why I'm Sharing My Journey as a Custom Costume Designer

In the niche market of custom costume design, I aim to expand my client base and establish new relationships. Over the past couple of years, finding clients has been a struggle, compounded by the business slump during the pandemic and personal losses that limited my time. With my granddaughters grown and no longer connected to the skating and dance communities, I am turning to blogging to foster new connections and showcase the diverse aspects of custom costuming. From sewing techniques and design exploration to equipment testing and innovation, I am excited to share my experiences and discoveries with the hope of attracting new clients and understanding their needs better.

Through this blog, my primary goal is to build meaningful relationships and grow my business. By providing valuable information, tips, and insights, I aim to empower skaters, dancers, parents, coaches, and clubs in making informed decisions about their costuming needs. I want to highlight the meticulous craftsmanship and artistic value that underpin every custom design, fostering a deeper appreciation for this specialized form of creativity. Additionally, I aspire to document success stories, share lessons learned, and offer practical guidance on various aspects such as fabric selection, measurement techniques, effective communication, and cost considerations. By utilizing a mix of media, including video clips on Instagram and writing articles on my website, I seek to engage and connect with my audience effectively.

Empowering Skaters, Dancers, and Performers: Insights from a Dedicated Costume Designer

My clients primarily come through word-of-mouth recommendations. Therefore, this blog serves as a platform to reach a wider audience. Skaters' parents, coaches, and clubs form a significant segment of my target audience. I aim to cater to their specific costuming needs, be it custom competition outfits, ice show costumes, or practice attire for testing before judges. Similarly, I endeavour to assist dance teachers and studios, focusing on various styles such as lyrical, hip/ hop, jazz, ballet, and character costuming for stage performances and competitions. By building trusting relationships and delivering excellent service, I aim to expand my reputation and serve the needs of these communities effectively.

With a wealth of experience in projects of many sizes, I will share insights into what leads to success, lessons learned from past endeavours, and the pros and cons of different approaches. By delving into topics ranging from costume design choices to favourite costume stories, I hope to equip my clients and readers with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions throughout their costuming journey. As I continue to create new design ideas, I aspire to offer ready-to-wear costumes for purchase during less busy periods, alongside sharing diary snippets to provide glimpses into my creative process.
